I like many different kinds of flute, but I would say that my favorite classical players these days are Jonathan Snowden(UK) and Matthias Ziegler(Switzerland). Matthias also plays the really big flute pictured in the FM primary photo. As for jazz players, I like Sam Most, Jeremy Steig, Hubert Laws, Herbie Mann and many others. As for rock, I think Ian Anderson is the best and most innovative.

Re: Favorite flutists?
Thu, September 16, 2004 - 10:51 AMMy favorite flutist is my mentor, Robert Dick.
I have actually never heard any of Ian Anderson's music. (This is unintentional. I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually!) This is weird because he is who I am most often compared to -- no doubt because he is the only rock flutist most folks know about. -

I was in a masterclass with him years and years ago and I remember thinking I never saw anybody play so RELAXED. It's all that tutelage from Keith Underwood I'm sure.

Re: Favorite flutists?
Tue, March 21, 2006 - 5:06 PMEmanuel Pahud is one of the most musical players(and disgustingly perfect) I have ever heard.
I met him about 10 years ago at an Italian flute convention and he was very nice.
Have you heard Ian Clarke's new cd? If you like contemporary stuff, it's great! But also accessible, so if you want to hear some extended techniques in some really fun pieces, check it out. It's called 'Within'
He's a British flutist and friend of mine.... -

I haven't met Ian Clarke yet. I saw him play those opera parodies at the con last year with funny hats on though.

Re: Favorite flutists?
Fri, June 2, 2006 - 11:27 AMMatt Eakle is a delight, out of the SF Bay Area--plays with Miya Masaoka (koto) and may be best known for being a long-time player in mandolinist David Grisman's band. He does a lot of circular breathing on the latest CD he recorded on and has an incredible for playing with atypical musical genres for the silver flute.
You bansuri fans should check out two others: Pannalal Ghosh (deceased, I believe) and Ronu Majumdar (on the younger side and in the US a lot).
For Sufi ney, there is no parallell (sp?) to Saddredin Ozçami (RIP)... truly soul-wrenching! (very few recordings exist but he is featured on that world music series that always has two or three different Spiritual traditions represented on each disc; His represents the Turkish Sufis.
Question: why are there few if any female flute players who have been acknowledged in this list of favorites? Because we don't hear about them? I invite you to explore this issue. -

Re: Favorite flutists?

Re: Favorite flutists?
Fri, June 2, 2006 - 1:22 PMMary Bergin is my whistle guru. ( i play whistle a lot more than flute) She's who i learned from , i mean i learned to play listening to her albums. She really invented her own intense style.

In wondering about this question of male female flute players, i first thougth of the classic 19th century parlor music duo with the female harp player and male flute player. Then that there are way more female harp players. but not satisfied with this answer, i looked online for studies on male birds singing for females and how that relates to humans and found this very interesting ( to me) link that ( be warned) has very little to do with flutes, but might have something to do with the question of male/female differences when it comes to music. Very interesting ideas on dance and evolution.

Re: Favorite flutists?
Sat, June 3, 2006 - 10:49 AMthanks... good info! i'll be checking it out. Also, though not necessarily a favorite flautist, there is an interesting recording by Carol Adee for Bach to Nature: she plays Bach cello concertos on the flute in various rainforests of south america, north america, and maybe somewhere else. Really beautiful how the rainforest birds interact with Bach and the flute! -

Re: Favorite flutists?
Mon, May 28, 2007 - 12:02 AMShort list: Rampal fer classical (although I own nearly as many recordings of Galway, so [shrugs]...), Eric Dolphy fer jazz, and of course Ian Anderson fer rock.
Lately, though, a lot of what I've been listening to has been more along the lines of folks like: R. Carlos Nakai, Douglas Spotted Eagle, Robert "Tree" Cody, and Mary Youngblood...

Re: Favorite flutists?
Thu, January 17, 2008 - 7:48 PMJust started teaching myself to play the flute after hearing EJ Jones play .... he also plays the bagpipes pretty good too ;)
I'm a fan of Turlach Boylan too. And Ian Anderson of course!
Haven't heard many other flutists yet, but I'm working on it.
