New here!

Thought I'd post a quick introduction.

I have always loved the flute and envied everyone who could play it. I was convinced however that I could never be able to.

Then I met and befriended EJ Jones (of Clandestine fame, for hose who love Celtic music like me!). After hearing him play his Irish flute, particularly his rendition of Bonny Portmore on The Rogues 2005 album Roguetrip, I decided to attempt the seemingly impossible ... teach myself! Thankfully I do have some help from the flutist at church, not lessons as such though.

It's harder than it looks!! LOL However, I think I have made good progress for a beginner. I have a simple student quality metal flute, closed hole in the key of C. It seems to play pretty well, though I will probably have to look at something of better quality should I continue to progress.

Anyway, am working more on developing good tone (oh and learning to read music would be helpful too I suppose!).

Tips and suggestions would always be welcome!

Favorite flutists?

I like many different kinds of flute, but I would say that my favorite classical players these days are Jonathan Snowden(UK) and Matthias Ziegler(Switzerland). Matthias also plays the really big flute pictured in the FM primary photo. As for jazz players, I like Sam Most, Jeremy Steig, Hubert Laws, Herbie Mann and many others. As for rock, I think Ian Anderson is the best and most innovative.

flute repairs?

I might have already asked this question on this tribe --

I have two old flutes that I like to use as travel flutes that are in desperate need of repair.

Can anyone recommend a reliable and reasonably priced person or shop that does flute repairs in either the East Bay or San Francisco?

Thanks!

My all time favorite flute!!!!

I was in Spokane, WA the summer, fall and winter of '91-'92 when I overhauled the motor of a '66 VW squareback I lived out of a dozen years from '82-'94. I'd had to do this twice due to leaving out $15 worth of parts I thought I didn't need, and the second time ended up sleeping in a tent in an alley behind an older woman's house whose back yard I was using to work on my car.

That was in the fall, actually from the beginning of August until after the first of the year, and during this time I was in a local second hand store and found a flute they were asking $12.50 for made out of what I think was an old piece of copper boiler pipe, with ten tone holes and an embouchure plate of high-grade aluminum. They sold me the flute for ten dollars, they said because I was the only one who'd ever been able to get a sound out of the instrument; and with that for encouragement I began trying to play sometimes in the wooded area where me and my car were parked.

This flute had been etched "FANTASY FLUTE" below the embouchure plate with a device like tools are marked "stolen from..." with, and had been similarly marked on the back "c. 1982" and "J. Duel"

I'd learned how to play the Boehm style flute with keys and pads this copper pipe flute was pitched identical to in C, but since the left thumb hole on the copper flute was so different I'd at first had difficulty holding my new instrument properly.(I remember the last time I saw "val" Robin Culver from Thousand Oaks, CA who'd been the piccolo player in the symphony at North Texas University the '70-'71 school year when I was undoubtably the worst of 2000 music majors that year as a saxophone major, who'd shown me the "baby tones" exercise on my flute...who ten years later had two young sons and had married a very handsome man with the last name of Le Duc whose mustaches were so large they could be seen from behind, who she'd gotten hitched to when she said she'd been trying to decide between Jean Pierre Rampal and Julian Baker for her next flute teacher...I'd lived in Ojai, CA and had been riding a '73 Aermacchi 350 cc motorcycle through Thousand Oaks from Malibu in '82 and her uncle had been in the phone book and given me her number then)

Not until that December when I wandered uptown the day after Thanksgiving when I made $29 standing on a street corner with my flute did I start to get serious about playing it,* and after a week or so of playing about four hours a day on the street and practicing four additional hours in private in all twelve keys I began to get really proficient. Ultimately I made $700 that month, but had the great disappointment of having the flute stolen between X-mas and New Years.

This flute was really elegant and the metal around the tone holes began to shine with a warm glow after I'd played on it awhile and they became polished with use.(I'd gotten a cheap pair of knit synthetic material bright red gloves in the PAYLESS drug store across the street from the corner I found I liked to play at best, and cut off all the ends of the fingers and thumbs)

The thing was also a lethal weapon, a heavy metal pipe a person could've laid someone out with for good, and which knowing the story of the Japanese samurai inventing the shakuhachi flute which doubles as a similar weapon, when forced to give up their swords by the government, I thought very highly of this aspect of my flute, too.(and was mildly terrified as I'm pretty lame as a martial artist!)

Years later in October of '05 I was visiting Bert Wilson and Nancy Curtis in their Olympia, WA home and told them about this flute and Bert was interested since he told me that "DuEl" was what Duke Ellington's friends had called him.(both are very accomplished avant garde jazz musicians as woodwind players, and Bert calls Nancy "the flute God!" <http://www.bertwilson.com>)

*For months I'd thought this flute was some hippie's mistake and had only tried to play to birds to see if they'd talk back to me. They always had, except the day after Thanksgiving a lonely seeming pigeon on one of the two crosses on top of the Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church in Spokane had refused to make any comment, which led to my wandering uptown a short ways from there when I made the $29 without sounding remotely like any music I'd ever heard, and similarly that weekend when I made $60.

Two other experiences stand out from that month, one of which was making friends with homeless "ex-east coast radical lesbian" Dixie who was belle of Spokane's skid row I got a big crush on, who was ringing bell for the Salvation Army and who asked me to play "Amazing Grace" for her which I did perfectly without knowing the words.

The other remarkable experience was one day when I'd had my flute with me under my green wool forest service jacket I always wore when I played, with one end in one of my front pants pockets and the other under an arm pit.

I was crossing the street near the big Bon Marche' department store's main entrance in a busy part of downtown, and a nice looking middle aged woman had been crossing just where I was going in the opposite direction, and we'd both noticed at that moment that there was an amazing pause in reality all around us where absolutely no noise of street traffic could be heard in any direction, a fluke of the cosmos so to speak and likely incredibly rare, when for some reason all the cars, trucks and buses which usually were to be both seen and heard in any direction simply somehow were absent from their usual patterns.

This gave a sense to me of being out in a remote rural country side in mid winter when a simple sort of quiet prevailed compared to other seasons of the year, perhaps muffled by a layer of freshly fallen snow.

Such a subtle pause that day we'd both appreciated and noticed of each other amidst all the confusion, heavy traffic, noise and jostling of the season's commercial rush.(the 23rd & 24th both I'd made $150 each day, but on the 23rd people were almost throwing the money at me, insane with the whole long drain of emotions and pocket book and with a very palpable anger at having to be there then; while on the 24th I think most of the people still in downtown were merchants or their employees-all of whom seemed to float about six feet above the sidewalk as they came by me, all their tasks finally fulfilled and their coffers full, ready to relax and enjoy themselves)

I decided to make a new group for Irish flute & whistle players since Tribe didn't have one specifically already. Please join if you're interested & let's get some discussions going! :)

Popcorn - sheet music

Do you remember the song? If not, check out www.popcorn-song.com for a little reminder (certainly almost everyone has heard it). There is sheet music there, but it is 39 pages long and seeing as I just started re-learning the flute after 20 years of not playing it's a bit confusing, so I'm hoping to find an easier version.

And while I'm at it...I'm also looking for Funky Town, if anyone knows of any online resources (I think that will be easier to find though, and haven't actually looked yet).

Thanks!

She is a *rock star* on the piccolo. I heard her play at the Madison Area Flute Festival this past weekend where I was a presenter too. It was the best picc playing I've ever heard. Such control, such sensitivity, wow.

I never actually heard how beautiful the Lieberman concerto is until this past Saturday night!

Purchasing a Kaval

Hi, all,

I play several different types of flutes and have been interested in learning the kaval for years. I've finally got more spare time, & want to purchase a kaval as soon as I can to begin learning this amazing instrument! I can't seem to find a place to purchase one where I can trust that the quality will be professional, in tune, etc. though.

Where or from who would you recommend purchasing a very good quality kaval? Also, what is the price range for these instruments?

I've seen kavals for sale on Ebay, but not very much elsewhere, & I don't know how these instruments play. I definitely want to find something I can play for years to come! :)

Thanks so much!

learning to play by ear

I have played the flute for 25 years but am extremely "paper trained." I am a fabulous sight reader but playing by ear is a challenge. I can do it when I'm singing and playing drums, but getting those melodies in my head connected to my fingers is not quite there yet.

Does anyone have any hints on how to develop this skill?

I am a musician from Munich/Germany, and I am looking for somebody being able to play and record ethnic flutes (for example duduk, but also others).

My new album will be a mix between Black Hawk Down soundtrack, Passion of Christ soundtrack, and maybe a bit Dead Can Dance.

If you wanna find out more about my music, visit www.spi-ritual.com.
But warning: this is an ethnic/metal project, my new album won´t have any metal elements :-)

My email adress: stefan@spi-ritual.com or stefan@shiva-in-exile.com

Greetings from snowy Germany,

This concert is dedicated to the memory of the artist Robert Kostka, whose work will be featured in a Memorial Retrospective at Meridian. Light refreshments will be served following the concert.

(No one turned away for lack of funds)

Philip Gelb will perform pieces on the Japanese shakuhachi flute inspired by and dedicated to the painter, Robert Kostka. Since meeting Kostka and encountering his work (at Meridian Gallery several years ago), Gelb has found that they both explore similar ideas. Both have studied intensely, traditional Japanese art forms and brought these ideas into a contemporary medium, painting and music. Kostka’s use of shading, timbre and time in his paintings is very similar to the way Gelb approaches the same concepts in sound. Gelb’s concert will be in the context of a retrospective of Kostka’s work at Meridian Gallery.

Philip Gelb is one of the most active shakuhachi performers and teachers in North America. He runs the Bay Area Shakuhachi School, teaching traditional and modern music to over 20 students. Although he performs traditional music (both Japanese and Jewish), he focuses on new and contemporary music. He has premiered numerous pieces for shakuhachi solo and in a variety of contexts with other instruments. Some of the composers he has collaborated with and premiered pieces by are: Pauline Oliveros, Chris Brown, Dana Reason, Jon Raskin, Phillip Greenlief, Matthew Sperry, Tom Baker, Christian Asplud, Hugh Livingston, William Ludtke, Yoshiaki Onishi, and Christopher Shainan. As a composer himself, he has written music for solo shakuhachi, for all his own ensembles and for shakuhachi and string ensembles. He frequently collaborates with choreographers such as Eri Majima, Koichi Tamano, and June Watanabe. Philip Gelb began studying shakuhachi in 1990 while a graduate student in Ethnomusicology at Florida State University with Dale Olsen. He then continued his studies in New York with Ronnie Seldin and now studies with Yoshio Kurahashi.

This concert series celebrates new, traditional and world music through monthly performances in the intimate setting of Meridian Gallery. Tom Bickley is the curator for this concert series. For more information please see our website at www.meridiangallery.org.

question about getting into the studio recording business

Hey now fellow flutists,
I've been thinking about making a demo that I can use to get into the music recording studio business (ie. anything that requires flute playing from commercial jingles to other stuff...I have no shame ;-).

Has anyone done this kind of thing before? I need advice on the process of getting into the studio recording business -- how many tracks I should record, what genres of music and places to get sheet music.

Many thanks and happy new year to you all.

Hi,

I've been playing for about 18 years. Went to the University of Colorado School of Music for a couple of years, then dropped out. I continue to keep up my skill with private lessons and the occasional amateur performance.

Just to keep this intro from being so boring I'll ask a question:

What is your absolute favorite flute piece?

My answer is that I don't necessarily have one favorite (lol). I'm very partial to Bach. As far as more modern stuff goes, I'd have to say the Hindemith Sonate.

How about you guys?

Since I began playing the flute in the 4th grade I've come across many works that I would just LOVE to play, but that haven't been arranged for flute or flute choir. The one that stands out is Dvorak's Serenade for Strings in E Major.

But then there is that chance that changing the intrumentation of a piece will mess it up entirely. I mean, there must be a reason it's a Serenade for Strings and not a Serenade for Flutes (or even winds). LOL

So, what piece, orchestral or otherwise, you would love to play that isn't currently transcribed for flute?

Does anyone have any recomendations for good sheet music? I usually play classical, but I'm open to any good suggestions!

Also, I've been looking for a place in SF to buy sheet music, but I haven't found a place with a good selection. Any helpful hints would be great!

So.

Who's done it?
Any flute teachers out there?

I'm planning to take a stab at it in the fall. Part of a move towards self employment alongside some other schemes. I'm thinking in home, beginners, 15$can for 1/2 hour, basics of classical and folk, maybe some jazz later.

Any advice is appreciated. tips, traps, resources, stories....

thanks fluties.

I played my flute with members of Duran Duran yesterday! (2/25/05)

http://www.my941.com/jacor-common/globalphotos.html?eventID=28291&pagecontent=

so, those of you who haven't heard the story.....

Marc(my husband) told me about an auction for tickets to attend
San Diego radio station 94.1's Underground Lounge with
Simon LeBon and Andy Taylor of Duran Duran, for which
was a benefit for the Children's Hospital. I won one
pair of 7 to attend the concert. Since we couldn't
take photos, I decided to take my flute.

When the radio station called to give me the details,
the promotions manager told me that the special guest
was John Taylor and that was a great surprise.

After over an hour waiting in the station's lobby, the
guys showed up and sound checked. We were allowed in
and Marc and I sat in the middle of the crowd. They
played 'What Happens Tomorrow' and seemed to be having
a good time. I knew when Simon reached for the
acoustic guitar behind him, that 'Save A Prayer' was
next. Marc raised his hand, but they couldn't see him
because of the stage lights. I made him put his hand
down. I carefully put my flute together and quietly
tuned during the first part of the song. When they
got to the chorus, I started playing Nick's synth
line. The look on their faces was priceless! They
could not find the source of the song until the
station's camera guy took a photo of me. (shot 11)
Simon then waved me up on stage and I played out the
rest of the tune with them. After it was over, John
asked 'Who the hell are you?!?' and Simon said 'We
have our own James Galway in the studio, although a
heck of alot better looking.' I got to say a few
words and then they went to the next tune.

We taped the performance off the radio, and although
you can't hear my flute on the recording, they didn't
take the comments out of the airing. I hope to edit
that soon and make an MP3 out of it.

It was totally cool!!!

so what are you all playing these days? I have to play in a flute choir concert on Monday night for the flute guild here. My trio is playing a Kwanzaa trio by Valerie Coleman and Hava Nagilah. I am also playing my contrabass in the concert- some arrangement of a Bach Sinfonia and a jazz tune.

I am also guiding my HS flute students through their solos and ensembles for their contest in January. Some are doing really well.

I just wanted to report that the playalong I hosted this past Saturday in San Diego was a rousing success. Sir James and Lady Jeanne were so personable and happy to play with the 40 of us who came along. They even stayed 15 minutes longer for photos and autographs. We played Brian Boru, Allegro(Mozart), Tambourin(Gossec) and Men of Harlech. I will post photos when I get them. If the Galways are coming to your town, look for the playalongs. I know there is one in Memphis this Saturday, October 9. It's a real treat for all of us!

I have been performing classical, jazz, electronica( http://fn2.freenet.edmonton.ab.ca/~resonate ), balinese suling, funk ( www.pocketsizeplanet ) and improvised music for the last few years. I also have private students and a group class at a local HS. If I can help you with your flute, I will find the answer if I can't answer myself!

Welcome!

Seismic Disturbances

This is from a concert I participated in in Santa Barbara on February 22,2004. There are alot of low instruments- double bass, bass saxophone, contrabass bassoon, sarrusophone, serpent and the like. I think my first entrance on contrabass flute is about 30 seconds in- I'm tremolo-ing away!
